Grant was a West Point graduate with several years of experience as an army officer, including combat experience in the mexican War. After he re-entered the army by the Civil of the War, he was promoted and given increasingly more important commands since he was winning battles. In short, he worked his way to the top because he proved himself as a commander in the field.
