Through the connection of the collector to the base, you get a *lower* forward voltagedrop that with a simple diode. Example: germanium diode-connected transistor has a drop of about0.13 volts, rectifier diode of approximately 0.3 (more than 2.5 times) Is that rectifiers are optimized for the rectification, aredesigned to work on (in general) more current, and are cheaper.
