The original capital city of Guatemala, Antigua. It was alsocalled Guatemala, but in the 1800s, there were severalearthquakes that caused the nearby volcano of Water to erupt. Onlyinstead of eruption with lava broke out a huge pocket of waterflooding throughout the city. Several natural disasters such as thiscaused the people to move the capital to a safer place in 1821.The old capital was renamed with the name of Antigua Guatemala (now called Antiguafor short) and the new capital got the name Guatemala City.
