Read the excerpt from "Mother Tongue." Lately, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no other way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. How does Tan build a central idea of her story in the excerpt? Tan discusses her thoughts about language to build the idea that the English language does not have words to match some Chinese terms. Tan discusses her relationship with her mother to build the idea that mothers and daughters in all cultures often have misunderstandings. Tan discusses her mother’s use of English to build the idea that a form of language can be purposeful and meaningful even if it is nonstandard. Tan discusses the English language to build the idea that there is a lack of appropriate synonyms for the word “broken.”

Since the Earth's human population developed into societies, there has been some kind of military. It seems that the groups that can't get along as we would like. There are always in which a bully that wants what you have. In order for you to maintain what you have, you must be willing to fight for it. Sad, but true. The weak have always been preyed upon by those who thought they were stronger. Look at some of the wars and conflicts that are happening today all over the world. Some countries that have no military has been abused, stolen from, murdered, enslaved by some other country that had the strength to take what they want. The countries that have the strength to stop them also have a moral obligation to help the weak. We also have the right to defend our land and its people. Because there is always a bully, there must always be a protector. If a bully attacks a weak country, then they can only get more brave and more strong, and it is only a matter of time before you try a larger country. If you see a friend being beaten, going to gather the strength within yourself and come to their aid? Or you will turn around and pretend it didn't happen? If someone bigger than you attacks, you lay down and give up? Or are you going to defend yourself? In a "perfect" world, it would not be necessary to have armies. Until then, we have to be able to protect ourselves. We should be very proud of those who serve to fight against injustice and terrorism, and to ensure our freedom.
