Why are countries closer to the equator have a lower literacy rate?

While this is a generalization full of holes, a reason could be that those near the equator are mainly tropical. This people is relatively easy, as far as the supply of food and the work out was never a big problem. Thus an agrarian society prevails and the strongly agrarian societies have not put too much stock in education. Therefore, a lower rate of literacy.
