Syngman Rhee. Rhee, who had been originally an opponent of the Japanese occupation in Korea (1910 to 1945). He had lived in exile in the united States for many years, and studied at several American Universities. He became President of the Republic of Korea in 1948, and that assumes dictorial powers during the Korean War. Finally, he was forced to resign in 1960 after protests over its rigging of the elections. As a staunch anti-Communist, Rhee was supported by the Americans and the West, but it remains controversial due to the number of civilians who died during their attempts to purge South Korea from the Communists.
