The Purkapile's marriage is very resentful. Mr. Purkapile left for a year, and then, when he returned to find his wife hadn't left him, he lied and said he was kidnapped by pirates. Mrs. Purkapile very well knew that he was lying, but refused to be a woman who is divorced.
