It is a term that was originally used about 1,000 years ago in England. For a fee, innkeepers would provide travelers (usually people on religious pilgrimages) with a room for the night and the food (of the board). The food was served in a makeshift, temporary table, usually a board of wood on two sawhorses-like structures.
