Read the excerpt from "Mother Tongue." Lately, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no other way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. How does Tan build a central idea of her story in the excerpt? Tan discusses her thoughts about language to build the idea that the English language does not have words to match some Chinese terms. Tan discusses her relationship with her mother to build the idea that mothers and daughters in all cultures often have misunderstandings. Tan discusses her mother’s use of English to build the idea that a form of language can be purposeful and meaningful even if it is nonstandard. Tan discusses the English language to build the idea that there is a lack of appropriate synonyms for the word “broken.”

When you read to your children, talk with them, discipline them, train them, that are just starting out in home education. If you continue with more formal instruction is a decision you can make later. I believe that every good and responsible parent is to the education in the home of the parents, even if they send their children to an out-of-school. My wife and I have homeschooled our five children. The age range of 22 to 12. Our oldest will graduate from college this spring and our young people is in the sixth grade. All of them have done well.We both have education degrees, but some of the best teachers I've known have lacked teaching certificates, while a couple have only high school diplomas. We have taught in the public schools where we have seen both wonderful and abysmal teacher. While most probably enter the field for the right reasons, some are just stuck for money, health insurance and pensions. Rather than risk a few like that for our dear children, we decided to try home education. Each year, we continued with the assessment of our children, to make sure that we were doing the best they can. We continue to keep them at home, but we have participated in a large number of out-of-the opportunities and experiences that could be well-rounded and responsible. We have participated in a home education cooperative in which my wife taught subjects in which she is strong and other parents taught classes in the subjects in which they were comfortable. That was a big help, also. Finally, in the last two or three years of high school, we dual-enrolled at our local community college. This is without a doubt much more than the information that is requested, but I wanted to show the holistic approach to the continuity of thought. Try it. See how it works for you. See if you can handle it. Try to find mentors in your area. Try to find a support group. We believe that it is a great life, and we think that the children will be better for it. And that is what we all desire: to see our children!
