When is the best time to pursue a master’s degree?

I have had intentions of getting a post graduate degree ever since I completed my bachelor’s program. However, it never seems like the right time especially now that I have a great career. I have considered taking a program at a masters university that offers part-time 1 year masters programs but I am still not sure whether it is the right time to get my master’s degree. How can you tell when it is the right time for you to further your education and when you do, do you have to leave work?

Back in the day, people used to get their masters degree when they needed to improve their chances of getting a promotion or when they wanted to get more skills and knowledge in their field. Today, students get their post graduate degrees as soon as they are done with their bachelor’s programs. This is because it has become more difficult to secure employment after school. It is believed that when you have a master’s degree, you are more marketable and you are more likely to get a job faster than someone who only has an undergraduate degree.

If you are confused about when to join a master’s university you need to consider where you are in your career. Are you happy with your achievements? Will furthering your education improve your chances of getting a promotion or a higher salary? Can you afford it? The answer to these questions will give you a clear direction of what you need to do.

Furthering education is never a bad idea. In fact, there are plenty of benefits you get from pursuing a higher education. These include:

  • Increased Career Options

A master program equips you with different skills and more knowledge in your field. This enables you to be able to do jobs that require an individual who has specialized in that area. This is very important if you are thinking about changing careers.

  • Better Salary

Furthering your education qualifies you for a higher salary. Employers are willing to pay employees with master degrees more because they bring more to their companies.

  • You Gain Credibility

When you have an advanced degree in your field, you will get a lot of respect and people will begin seeing you as an authority in your field. This will make it possible for you to take advantage of opportunities you have never thought of taking advantage of and it will really improve your brand.

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why you should pursue an advanced degree.  The best thing about a master program is that you do not have to quit your job to go back to school. A number of universities offer part-time programs because they know most people who take the programs work full time. Therefore, take the step and enroll in the 1 year master program you have been thinking about. You will not regret making the decision of going back to school.

I agree, deciding when to get a post graduate degree is a difficult decision. You have to think about your finances, how you are going to balance school and work and there is also the concern that it might not work out as you hoped. I believe the best time to get an advanced degree is when you are really comfortable with your career and nothing challenges you anymore. When you are in this situation, it is a sign that you are not living up to your full potential. Going back to school will not only equip you with more skills and knowledge but it will remind you why you chose your career. It will provide new challenges and it will make things more interesting. Apart from this, it will open doors to numerous opportunities you might never have been able to take advantage of.  Just take the step and do it.
