When is Armed Forces Day?

I wonder when is the official Armed Forces Day? Is it a set date or does it vary from year to year? When should we expect the Armed Forces Day 2018 celebrations? I know it has been previously known as the Veterans Day, though the time for this one has been also slipping my mind. I know that it differs from country to country and would like to know the accurate dates of the U.S. and UK celebrations. Do they differ in any way? In advance, I would like to wish the happy Armed Forces Day to all people in the world connected to the military.

This holiday, like many others is common for many countries of our planet. However, as always each one of them has its own traditions and rules. So, the Day of Armed Forces is also celebrated on various dates.

In the U.S., it falls on the third Saturday of May. Actually, there is a whole Armed Forces Week, during which people commemorate the deeds of veterans and honor military services. It begins before the Day on the second Saturday of May.

So far, this holiday has been around for nearly 70 years and, year after year, people attend parades and air shows on this day. Some states even compete in the longevity and scope of their parades. They set new records and design new spectacular shows to beat them.

In addition, there are a few dates when the Armed Forces and the National Guard are also honored including Memorial Day, Flag and Army Day, US Navy Birthday, Veterans Day on November, 11th, and so on.

In the UK, Armed Forces Day was previously known as Veterans Day. The name of this holiday was changed back in 2009. Since then, it is celebrated on the last Saturday of June. So, Armed Forces Day of 2018 is going to be on June, 30th. Before the change, Veterans Day has been celebrated for only three years. The official wanted to make sure that everybody remembers and understands the role of veterans in the life of the country. No matter the name of the holiday, it is celebrated in the same way following the same traditions. There are local ceremonies everywhere. The medals are presented to men and women of the military. Though it is celebrated in all cities of the UK, this is not a public holiday.

It also has strong connections with the Remembrance Day that is actually closer to the U.S. Armed Forces Day. This is an annual memorial day of the Commonwealth that has great significance for all nations. Since the First World War, people honor the contribution of all members of armed forces. This is a combination of the joyous end of the war hostilities and the grievance for many souls lost in the battles. We cannot say that Remembrance Day is a cheerful holiday, but we can wish happiness for Armed Forces Day, no matter what we live in.

Yes, there are great differences between Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Day. While the latter is meant to honor the past deeds of our great-fathers who have valiantly fought in a war, the former is about all members of armed forces. This day, we pay our respects to all men and women connected to the military. Just as in the U.S., the UK cities throw parades and festive events this day that attract many people. This is a holiday when even children feel the public spirit and know to show respect.

In the UK, there is also a week of celebrations. On Monday before the Day, the Armed Forces Flag is raised on famous landmarks summoning the spirit of anticipation and silent preparations for the weekend. Numerous communities and organization take charge of local festivals and other events to show their support for the cause of servicemen.
