First of all rust is formed when iron is exposed to oxygen and water/ vapopurs. The formula for the oxide isFe 2 0 3 .xH 2 0. Now x varies whichdetermines the extent to which the oxide is formed. Basically Oxide isformed along the surface of the plate thus avoiding rustingof the inner layers.
