When and where will the NAFSA conference take place this year?

I am an international student advisor. I am a new member of NAFSA and I am very interested in making new contacts in the field. I have heard that NAFSA annual conference is a great opportunity for people in my field to improvise themselves. So I am eagerly waiting for the event this year. Can you give me some information on when and where this event will take place and how much it costs? In addition, it will be helpful if you could provide some ideas of what will be the duration and content of the NAFSA 2018 meeting.

Yes, you are one among the thousands of NAFSA enthusiasts eagerly waiting for the NAFSA annual meeting. This year’s event will take place from May 27 to June 1. The event will be held at Philadelphia in Pennsylvania which plays a vital role in American history. This year’s event is named “Diverse Voices, Shared Commitment”. As the name indicates, in the much awaited event, there will be more than 10,000 attendees from more than 100 countries.

According to the association website, the event is a great learning opportunity with experts like top administrators, authors, education leadership, enrolment management, and many more under one roof, helping you to find simple solutions to the problems you face and offering opportunities to connect and collaborate. According to the event overview, there will be more than 200 professional learning sessions and programs as a part of the event, along with separate programs for managers, directors, provosts, and presidents. In addition, there will be presentations and talks on various relevant issues ranging from global learning, internationalization, risk management, and peacebuilding.

More importantly, there is a chance to meet prospective partners to work with in the future, because the organizers have arranged various events meeting the needs of various kinds of stakeholder, ranging from education abroad networking events and programs, international enrollment management events, international student and scholar services events, international educational leadership events, teaching, learning, and scholarship events, and special partnership building events. Therefore, it is clear that your all needs related to international education can be met by attending this event.

Though it is not possible to cover the entire event schedule of 2018 NAFSA here, the following is a list of important workshops in the event. On Sunday, 27 May, there is a workshop named “Strategies for International Student and Scholar Advising” from 8 am to 5 pm. If you are an international student advisor or in any other profession of the same nature, this workshop will help you immensely in your career. In addition to that, there are a large number of pre-conference workshops for different purposes on the same day, ranging from Education Abroad: Critical Skills for the Adviser, Managing the Education Abroad Office, Employment-Based Permanent Residence, F-1 Student Advising for Beginners, F-1 Student Advising: Intermediate, J-1 Advising for Beginners, to mention but a few. Remember, as the name indicates, there are more than 200 programs for you.

Are you a first timer at NAFSA conference? I think I can give you a few tips to help you make maximum out of it. First of all, do your homework. Well, what I mean is, spend some time learning about NAFSA and the people who are going to attend the event with you, and try to figure out what speakers and workshops are going to benefit you most. Secondly, make connections wisely. Yes, being a newcomer, it can be difficult to identify who people are important and useful and who are not. Therefore, don’t panic if you fail to make an important connection instantly. Take your time and make sure that you do not dismiss anyone as unimportant. Connections will develop gradually. Finally, take it lightly and have adequate rest. Try to delegate all work well in advance and keep your email away if possible so that you are not diverted and stressed out. And if you are tired, think about having sufficient sleep instead of feeling bad about leaving those after parties early.
