The Byzantine Empire grew out of the Roman Empire. The roman law,customs, and language were dominant factors for most of itsexistence. Thus, in fields such as philosophy, values, snow-capped peaksthe structure andChristian belief was a 'Western' State. It was not muchinfluenced by most Western principles of medieval culture, such as it was,and most of the Byzantines considered the culture as little more than barbarian'. Another line of defense " against later Western cultural influencewas the fact that the Byzantine Empire was very active at the Head of the Orthodox Church, while the Western culture of the time wasoverwhelmingly influenced by the Roman Catholic religion.
