This depends on what type of photography you want to achieve. If you can afford the luxury of high-end digital camera, then you don't need as much technical training as the camera will to do all the work for you. I just read the instruction manual very carefully. Also, in this digital era, you will likely benefit by taking one or two classes in the software that you will use to process the images after you have purchased. For example, Photoshop, Corel, and so on. The software that comes with the camera will be fine if you want personal pictures of the family and your vacation. However, if you have professional plans, you will have to invest in one of these professional (and more expensive) programs. If the subject material is more journalistic, then you might consider the possibility of classes of journalism (or books), to learn what the professional and legal standards. If you are interested in artistic images, you might consider the possibility of art classes that will teach you how to use lighting, perspective and so on to generate the effect. Be cautious about the kinds of art, however, because many of them are really bad.
