What is Veterans Day?

What is Veterans Day really about? Many people have answered this question differently that has left me even more confused than I was before. I need an objective explanation of what it entails. Why do we celebrate Veterans Day in America? I really want to know what makes this day so important. Should everyone have their own approach to the Veterans Day meaning?

Veterans Day is an American federal holiday observed to honor and appreciate all who serve or served in the military. However, according to the dictionary, Veterans Day is a public holiday in the U.S held on the anniversary of the First World War, 11th November to honor U.S veterans and victims of war. It replaced the Armistice Day in 1954. The most interesting thing about this day is that it is Remembrance Day in other countries. I guess the reason for the diverse opinions you've received about this day is the way it is defined in most dictionaries. Some people see the day as a celebration of people who served in the armed forces for a long period of time. Veterans Day is often confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day only honors those who died being in the military service. Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors all who served or are serving now in the U.S military. Another fact is that Veterans Day is both a federal and state holiday in the U.S. Every year, the ceremony is celebrated through parades, events, shows, etc at New York, Birmingham, or Washington DC.

In understanding why we celebrate Veterans Day, it is important to note that we celebrate it to acknowledge those who have sacrificed their time, resources, and a lot of things to sustain the integrity of their country. It's a time for us to honor those men and women who have served and are still serving in the armed forces. These people demonstrate courage and strength, so honoring them is the least we can do for them as a symbol of appreciation. For most people, this is a time to just relax at home and do some fun stuff.

In life, everyone can have their own opinion about the same events. Based on ideological differences, it is ok to hear diverse opinions about the meaning of Veterans Day. I guess the most important point is not to confuse it with the Memorial Day celebration.

I had no idea until now that there was a difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. I thought Veterans Day was a celebration of dead soldiers just as Memorial Day. Anyway, it's important that we all know why we celebrate these holidays. Personally, I love the fact that I can stay at home and relax all through the day, and believe me, that's all I usually do. I realize that we shouldn’t take it for granted. Sitting at home and doing nothing only shows your lack of acknowledgment of the contribution made by these people. Thus, the Veterans Day meaning is incomplete if we all do not participate in the celebration.

So what is Veterans Day? We must understand that any definition or description given to it must point to the fact that it's a celebration of people who have served in the U.S military or who are serving. The U.S English dictionary provides two definitions of the word 'veteran' which are:

  • A person with long experience of a particular activity;
  • A person who has served in the armed forces, especially an old soldier who has seen long service.

The second definition, however, envisages the whole essence of the Veterans Day celebration in the United States. It is actually a time to celebrate those who fight to protect the territorial integrity of our land. Without them, our country would be subjected to perpetual danger. The Veterans Day meaning thus entails the celebration of soldiers.
