What is the secret to becoming a better person?

I have always wanted to make steps towards becoming a better person. I have seen a number of my friends that have changed from being really terrible people to good ones and it has always looked so easy for them. However, this is not the case when it comes to me. I struggle with self-improvement. In fact, I always go back to my old ways after a week of trying. Nonetheless, I want to give it a real shot. I want to learn how to work on myself by using the most effective tips on how to improve myself. Are there any working tips you can share?

Do not expect to break a habit you formed over a long period of time in a single day or even a few days. You have been doing the same things over and over again and with time, these habits have become a part of who you are. Therefore, it will take a longer time to break them and form new habits that will also become a part of the new you. For this reason, to become a better person, the first thing you need to do is to practice patience. This means getting up and trying again when you fall or do not live up to your own expectations. There are a number of ‘how to improve me’ tips you can use to succeed in self-improvement. These include:

Focusing on One Habit at a Time
One of the things that can make it impossible to change is focusing on everything that you think is wrong with you. When you embark on your journey of self-improvement, you need to deal with one habit at a time. For example, if you want to be more attentive, patient, empathetic and caring, you should choose one habit to work on first and practice it until you get the hang of it before moving on to the next one.

Get an Accountability Partner
It is easy to go back to your old ways when you do not have anyone to hold you accountable for your actions. Therefore, when learning how to improve oneself, the first thing you need to do is to get an accountability partner. Make sure it is someone who will not let you move away from the right path and that it is someone who has your best interest at heart.

Understand your ‘WHY’
Many people begin journeys of self-improvement simply because their friends are doing it or they feel pressured to do it. These are the wrong reasons to improve yourself. Self-improvement should be something you want to do for yourself and for your own benefit because you truly believe it will be good for you. Therefore, if it is not your decision to start a journey of self-improvement, it wouldn’t be a great idea to start because there is a great likelihood that you will fail. Before you begin, take some time to ask yourself why the journey is important to you and why you think doing it will make you live a happier more fulfilled life.

I think the only secret to becoming a better person is wanting it bad enough. When you have reached a point in your life where you are tired with the person you are and you want to make a change, there is a great chance you will succeed because the intention is coming from within. However, if you start because you think people will like you more or you will get to hang out with everyone you like and get promotions for jobs, you will not last long because it might not happen. A great example is with addictions. When other people are telling you to stop, it is harder for you to do it because you really don’t feel the need to. However, when you get to a point where you want it for yourself, you will do everything in your power to quit and become a better person. The secret lies in you!
