If literacy is defined as persons aged 15 years and over who can read and write, then the literacy rate of the total population is 49.9%. (Those who know how to read and write, approximately 63% of them are men)

The figures from UNESCO as reported in their official journal on Sunday 19th October 2008 puts the literacy figure at 50%.According to the latest figures of the literacy rate of Pakistan has reached to 54% [2009 estimates].
