There are three different ways of defining. The first is the Arrhenius definition: An acid that produces hydrogen ions (H + ) in a solution and a base produces hydroxide ions (OH - ) in a solution. The second is the Bronsted-Lowry definition: An acid gives a proton (H+) to another thing, and a base takes a proton from another thing. Finally is the definition of Lewis: A Lewis acid accepts a pair of electrons. A base of Lewis donates a pair of electrons for binding.
