The word "difference" indicates subtraction. So you are going to subtract . . . 5 - (-9) = 5 + 9 = 14. This means that the 14 is the difference between 5 and -9. You can also use a number line to determine this answer . . . -9, -8, -7, -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 moving in the line from -9 to -8, to count 1 and continue counting to 5. You must be 14! (Yes, I know that there are 15 numbers written, but you are moving FROM one to the next, without counting each one individually. You just want to move FROM -9 to 5 on the line. The 14 moves forward!)
