What is tertiary education and where can I pursue it?

I recently completed my secondary education and to further my studies someone suggested I pursue tertiary education. What is tertiary education and what programs does it offer? I also would like to know the higher education courses offered in this education level. I have heard about India being a good place to study and I would like to know how the system of higher education in India works. I want more information about the higher education sector in this country and how its government is involved in the operation of this sector.

I am a graduate student currently undergoing my tertiary education level in India, so I have a little information about what tertiary education is. Tertiary education is any education undertaken after high school. This mainly includes post-secondary education and graduate education programs. You can therefore pursue tertiary education at any accredited education institution like college, university or vocation training center. On regular basis, the post-secondary education program takes around four years while the graduate program takes at least two years. The following are some education programs you can undertake in tertiary level of education:

  • Certificate Programs
This program offers students career training courses that enable them to train for a certain profession. After undergoing the program for at least six months of full time study the students can start working at the entry level of the trained career.
  • Undergraduate degree Programs
These programs include the diploma and degree programs. They consist of general learning of core and elective courses of your area of study.
  • Graduate Degree Programs
This is advanced learning of the undergraduate programs. You get a chance to undertake advanced courses of your area of study and even carry out research projects.
  • Graduate certificate programs
This program is undertaken by students to expand both their knowledge and skills. Students undertaking this program could be preparing for graduate degree programs. Over the years the higher education system in India has improved and many students nationally and internationally are joining higher education programs in the country. It is among the countries globally with the largest higher education forum and this has resulted in the country having a large population of working class people. Educational institutions in India offer various courses at the higher education level for instance you can pursue nursing, engineering,
art, design, medicine, law, pharmacy and many others. The Indian government is playing a major role through the department of education in helping the sector of higher education in running smoothly by offering numerous opportunities to students to enable them to pursue higher education. It has also introduced policies and programs to encourage public and private education institutions. India is globally relevant in providing higher education because India is strategically positioned on the higher education map in that it has reputable institutions and many countries have also partnered with other accredited international institutions. It is also a harbor for talent among its population and with the healthy competition it will prepare students to compete in other markets outside the country.

I am a recent graduate who finished my studies in the country and I agree that the tertiary education level globally mainly involves the programs mentioned above. However, I disagree that India is the best for you to undertake your tertiary studies; despite the progress India has
made in the higher education sector there are hiccups within the system. On a quick research I did when comparing where to undertake my studies at the tertiary level this is what I found out about India:

  •  India has a low employability rate of students since their curriculum is outdated and students may find it challenging to get employment outside the country.
  • Due to the country’s insufficient resources the government does not allocate enough to the department of education for students to undertake research projects.
  • The country also has a high student population compared to students which is resourceful for the education program.
