What is tertiary education?

In class, we got an assignment which requires us to discuss the current issues in higher education and the higher education law and how it affects students. As I was doing my research, I kept coming across the term tertiary education. Is it what is considered higher education or are they two different things? I would also like to know what the primary and secondary levels of education are. I think this information will enable me to do my assignment better and it might also come in handy in case I am given a similar assignment in the future.

Tertiary level education is what is considered as higher education. This level of education encompasses all academic pursuit that is undertaken after high school and is normally characterized into two: undergraduate and graduate education. Undergraduate education comprises every type of post-secondary education that takes a period of 4 years to complete. These include bachelor’s degrees, diplomas, certificates and associates degrees. Graduate education is done after completing the undergraduate level. It includes masters and doctorate programs. You can get tertiary level programs at community colleges, vocational schools, professional schools, universities and colleges. Therefore, if you are doing your research and finding current issues in tertiary education instead of higher education current issues, it is the same thing. The same case applies to higher education laws.

Primary education is also referred to as elementary education. This level of education encompasses education from kindergarten to sixth grade. This level of education aims at providing students with basic skills and knowledge that they will use for the rest of their lives.

Secondary education is more complex compared to primary education. At this level, students learn more complex subjects like science, math and languages. It encompasses education from 9 th grade to 12 th grade. Secondary education is what is mostly referred to as high school.

Primary and secondary levels are under the state department of education and the tertiary education is under the department that deals with higher institutions of learning in the state. The education structure of these levels of education varies from one country to another. Therefore, it is important for you to find our which structure your country or state uses so that you can have a clear idea of what you are supposed to discuss in your assignment. It is also advisable to get some further clarification from your teacher before you do the assignment. Another important thing you need to be careful about when writing your assignment is the laws of education. Laws of one country might not be the same as another country’s laws. Therefore, you need to be sure which country your teacher expects you to write about. Again, it is important to ask for clarification. Writing about any country might affect your grade because you might end up writing the wrong thing. Lastly, when you are doing your research, make sure you include the state or country name in your search so that you only get results that are related to your assignment.

Levels of education are similar throughout the world. The only difference is the terms that are used to refer to these levels of education. For example, in some parts of the world, they use primary, secondary and tertiary education while others use elementary, middle school, high school and college. They all refer to the same things. Therefore, I agree that you should understand which country or state your teacher expects you to discuss. This is important because it will also give you an idea of which terms to use. For instance, if you are writing a paper about a country in Africa, terms like primary, secondary and tertiary are more appropriate because these are the terms that are used when describing different levels of education. Also, when doing your research, do not focus on one source of information; use as many sources as you can to make your paper rich with information.
