Mexico is not a Spanish word. In fact, it is a Nahuatl word. Nahuatl was the main language used in central Mexico in the centuries just before the Spanish conquistadors arrived there, in the early SIXTEENTH century. It is an adaptation of the word "mexica", the name of the dominant people of the region at the moment. The mexica were also called Aztecs. The word MA“xihco could mean "in the navel of the moon" or, maybe "Land of Mexihtli" , i.e., Land of Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god of war. Huitzilopochtli means "hummingbird blue".
