What is government funding in education?

I will finish high school in two years and I intend to go to college after I finish my secondary studies. I am curious about government funding and government grants for college because I know that college expenses can be high and therefore I may need to submit an application for federal student grants.

School funding aims at providing students that face hardship with the financial help that they need to be able to go to school and have an adequate performance. Although that help is not necessary for all students, other students such as English language learners, students with special needs and low-income students may not be able to finish school without funding from the government.

Education helps develop the economy of a country and plays a fundamental role in transmitting from one generation to the next the values and principles of a society. Most governments have understood the great importance of this fact and, therefore, provide financial support to help students that lack the resources to follow their studies.

Although every student can apply to get financial aid from the government, the amounts received by each student each year can be different. This difference intends to ensure that every student receives effectively the resources that they need since the government knows that investing in the education of its citizens means investing in the progress of the whole country.

You need to fill in a financial profile form known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for grants for college from the government. The FAFSA is used by many financial support providers to determine your eligibility. You can submit your FAFSA from January 1 to June 30 every year ( ).

Statistics show that the states with the strongest growth in educational performance are have the strongest growth in productivity and, consequently, in employee benefits. Nevertheless, the quality of education does not depend on the state you study in. You can apply for a federal student grant regardless of your state of origin.

The Department of Education (ED) of the United States of America offers a range of federal grants to students that want to attend colleges or universities, community colleges and career schools. There are four types of federal grants: Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grants, Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants ( ).

I had already heard about those government grants for college because many of my classmates told me that they submitted their applications to get financial aid and they can afford their college expenses now thanks to the grants they got. Financial aid is very important to college students and I think that those grants from the government can solve, or at least ease to some extent, the students’ life in college. Some grants can cover most of a student’s expenses, while others may not be enough and the student must look for more financial help. Some of my classmates work part-time on the campus of the college, and that is another great way to pay for your studies. I have always liked sports and I am good at basketball, so it was very easy for me to apply for a sports scholarship and get it. But each case is different.

I know how important it is to have government funding to help you pay your college fees. I am studying now in college and if I had not got that government aid, I would not have been able to follow my higher education studies. It is a great help for many students. I applied for federal student grants and the whole process is less complicated than you can imagine and you can ask your college for help if you have questions about how to fill in the grants application forms.
