What is continuing education?

A week ago, my friend told me that she had enrolled in continuing education courses at a nearby college. I pretended to know what she meant because I could not gather enough guts to ask a blonde question like “What is continuing education?”

I started researching this topic on the Internet, but my searches led me to ASHA continuing education. This site provides useful information on speech and language. However, it did not answer my question. Another search landed me on free continuing education for cosmetologists.

Does anyone have information about it?

Let me start by answering what continuing education is. Continuing education is when people who are considered non-traditional students (adults above 25 years old) go back to formal school learning to stay updated in their career, develop skills in service delivery, train for a new occupation, attain a degree, or advance personal ambitions.

Many vocational institutions, universities, colleges, and organizations such as ASHA continuing Ed offer this service to adults. In many cases, the interested parties seek to achieve a further education to meet their personal and professional goals. The latter is the most common reason.

As an adult, these are some of the types of continuing education courses you can take:

  • Test Preps

If you did not graduate high school due to any reason, you could take a GED to get into college or to qualify for an occupation. Several vocational schools and community colleges offer programs to help you prepare for a GED examination.

You can also take tests to prepare for Bachelors or Masters admissions.

You can access excellent test prep resources at These resources consist of exams, quizzes and practice question to help you ace your final GED test. They include:

Away from that, I wish to inform you that, in some instances, continuing education is what will allow you to attain a license and professional certification. Certifications and licenses show that you are trained in recent regulations, methodologies, techniques, and technologies within your field.

Professionals in sectors such as healthcare and education have to pursue continuing education to renew their qualifications. Some institutions provide courses that offer Continuing Education Units (CEU) to meet this requirement.

Licensure and certification can also help you demonstrate that you attained the passing score on relevant tests within your professional field. You can get many career-specific continuing education courses online.
