The main difference is that the core, which usually has three branches, if the "core-type" core (or five for shell type " core), must adapt to the six windings: three primarand the phase windings and the secondary windings of the three phases. About three phase transformer may have additional windings (tertiary winding', for example) and for other different purposes.
