No law requires employers to offer laid off employees a reason or prior notice. That is called the principle of at-will employment. Employers should clearly indicate the effective the date of discharge, and must pay the former employee for all wages earned up to and including termination. Most states require payment on the next regular payday after dismissal. AFTER firing and employee, the employer may have to provide an explanation to state agencies to defeat a claim for unemployment benefits, or a charge of illegal discrimination. That is all. (MORE)
