What is an associate degree program and how can I enroll in it?

I’m researching on the different academic qualifications such as an AS degree in higher learning centers. I’m stuck at understanding the meaning of an associate degree program and where in this world one can obtain such a degree. I would appreciate very much if someone can help me understand what an AS degree means and in case I want to gain it how and where I can find colleges that offer such programs. In addition, enlighten me also on the qualifications required for associate degrees. Finally, I would also appreciate if you can help me understand what is an MA degree?

Associate’s degrees refer to academic degree programs that are held at an undergraduate level, usually the first stage after high school. Programs leading to these academic qualifications are targeted at giving students the foundational technical and academic proficiency as well as transferable skills needed in the employment sector or for the purpose of further studies. Associate’s degree programs are usually offered in the United States, but they can also be found in Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Hong Kong. The United Kingdom has similar programs, although they are referred to as foundation degrees.

In most parts of the United States, these programs are offered across the different types of colleges that include community, junior, technical and affiliated colleges as well as universities. The program often takes two full academic years of study. You can decide to enroll in either an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree since they are both open to students after completing high school level studies.

So, when choosing whether to enroll in a bachelors or an associates degree program, you should consider the following besides your high school diploma/secondary education exam certificate:

Time

Associate’s programs usually take half the time required for a bachelor’s program.  It is particularly useful if you intend to enter the job market as soon as you complete high school. You can always gain a bachelor’s degree later on, with the advantage of transferring a number of course credits to your bachelor’s program.

Costs

An associate degree program tuition fee tends to be lower comparing to a bachelor’s degree one. The cost is considerably reduced due to the fact that you are only required to get 60 credits hours to complete the course.

Entry requirements

You will need lower entry points into an associate program when compared to a bachelor’s degree program. It can always be the best alternative if you fail to get a direct entry to study a bachelor’s degree program.

An AS-degree stands for associate of science degree and is one among four types of associate degree programs that you can enroll in. Others include Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Applied Science (AAS) and Associate of Applied Arts (AAA). Associate of science degree program is targeted at preparing students who plan to major in bachelors of Science degree programs later on.

In regard to your question, “what’s an MA degree?” Note that this refers to a Master of Arts degree. It is a degree taken after completion of first degree in an art discipline such as History, Linguistics, Public Administration, Diplomacy and other studies.

The information above is really informative and has really helped in understanding the meaning an associate degree. Initially, I thought it was some sort of higher degree that you need to obtain in order to become an associate lecturer. Well, after having realized what the program entails, I also did some quick research and came up with the following:

Both Associate of Science and Associate of Arts degrees are designed to be transfer programs, whereas AAS and AAA are meant to prepare students for employment after completing their studies. I also found out that you can take associate’s degree program right from your home. Depending on the college which you are applying to, the admission requirements may differ. You should familiarize yourself not only with the requirements of admission but also with the deadlines for applications.

Finally, I noted that there are many reasons why a student should gain an associate degree. These include entering the workplace setting within the shortest time possible, saving and preparing for a bachelor’s degree program while you are already settled and experienced at work and in life.
