GPA is one way to allow some classes to count more. For example, AP classes in some high school may have a weighted average grade. So normally A would contribute 4 points to a GPA, but on a weighted average of the system, that was put into the calculation of AP counts as 5 points not 4. It is possible to have more than a 4.0 average, while, in a non-weighted one max is 4.0
