A pH number is a figure which expresses the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid, and uses a scale in which 7 represents neutral, lower numbers represent acidic substances, and higher numbers represent alkaline substances. If the substance is acidic, it will have more hydrogen ions in it, while if it is alkaline, it will have more hydroxide ions. Mathematically, the scale is logarithmic, with the formula log 10 c, where c represents the concentration of hydrogen ions in moles per liter.
