What helps a reader identify with a character?

Readers identify with characters that seem more real. Like a character with real emotions who acts like people act. Also identify more with people who seem to be like them-people who think and act as they would act and think if they were in the same situation. For example, the readers aren't going to identify with a "hero" that is absolutely perfect and never does anything wrong. They are identified with a person who is in a difficult situation and tries to help other people, but that makes some mistakes, and hurt them.
