What does the school bucks program entail?

I recently came about this program in one of the New York school districts and I can’t quite understand it. I would like to understand how it works and what impact it has on the area it operates in. Basically, all I know is that you can somehow pay for school lunches after signing up for this program and that it is supposed to be super-easy. I have tried accessing the school website but it is not very descriptive of the program. Does anyone have personal experience with school bucks? Please help.

It is actually called MySchoolBucks, just so you know. It is a quite handy service! Many parents across the country are finding it very convenient and time-saving. It provides you with a way to pay for your kids’ school-related expenses such as school lunch, lab fees, library fees, club fees, tuition, athletic fees etc.

This program is an online system that allows you to pre-pay school-related fees for your kids. The fee is credited to their account and can be accessed electronically at any time and place. However, if you do not want to use the online system, you can make payments in advance using cash or checks. This will in turn be put into your child’s account by a school representative.

Based on what I’ve heard about several New York schools, I can say that this program has enabled lines during meal time to move faster. This therefore gives a child a lot more time to actually eat the food and socialize with other students as opposed to waiting with a tray in hand for half of the lunch break.

The school buck program works in the following way:

  • Access the school’s website online.
  • Go to “add your student.” If you have more than one student, make separate accounts for each child.
  • Make the necessary payment for the student. Payments can be done using credit cards, debit cards and bank transfer. The payments are safely processed by the use of secure websites and encryptions.
  • The payments are then credited to the student account of your child.
  • When paying with a check please write your child's school ID # and full name on the back of the check.

Important features of this program include:

  1. Automatic top-ups when the balance of your child goes down
  2. A record of your child’s purchases
  3. Possibility of repetitive payments
  4. Alerts when the student’s account goes low
  5. Various payment options i.e. MasterCard, Discover, Visa and Electronic Check
  6. Fast reflection into child’s account (from a few minutes up to 48 hours at most)

To get low balance alerts use the steps below:

  1. Click on the relevant links on the website’s dashboard.
  2. Choose “Email preferences’’
  3. Mark the dialog box for email confirmation of payment
  4. Mark the dialog box for email alerts during low balance. You can uncheck this box when the school closes; however, remember to check it back upon its re-opening.

Wow, thanks for such a comprehensive and relevant answer on school bucks. It seems like you really do have some experience with this service!

I came across this program when I enrolled my daughter in elementary school. I must say this is the best and most convenient way to make payments if you ask me.

This program also allows other people to make payments for your student. You can do this by simply signing up for the program. A single student can be linked to several accounts. When more accounts are needed, just follow the steps mentioned above by the writer.

It really spares you a headache and hustle of making last-minute payments. Plus, you do not have to worry about giving your child money.

My concern, however, is that there are instances when duplicated meal payments occur. There should be a provision to ensure this does not happen.
