The "place" of a digit in a number refers to how many factors of ten that go in it. For example, in the number 123.456, 1 is in the hundreds place because it is multiplied band a factor of 100, 2 is in the tens place, because it is multiplied by a factor of ten, 3 is in the ones place, because it is multiplied by a factor of one, and so on. To put it another way, 123.456 is equal to 100 + 20 + 3 +.4 + .05 +.006, and 100 is equal to 1 times 100, .4 is equal to 4 times the tenth part, and .006 is equal to 6 times the thousandth part.
