What does NAFSA do?

I am an international student aspiring to study in the U.S. However, I am unable to find the right institution and course for me even after four months of search. Somebody told me that NAFSA could be of help. When I searched for the information online, I found there is an organization named NAFSA association of international educators. Can you provide me some information on this? What is the function of NAFSA international educator? Who are the members of this association? Do you think this association can be of help in finding a suitable course and college for me?

NAFSA stands for National Association for Foreign Student Affairs. The association’s full name since 1990 is NAFSA Association of International Educators. As the name indicates, it is an association of individuals worldwide who are working as foreign student advisors, admission officers, study abroad advisers, directors of international programs, ESL teachers, exchange program administrators, community volunteers and so on.

According to the mission statement of the association, its aim is to promote international education and workforce development by developing and promoting industry standards, offering training, and creating networking opportunities. Membership is offered to individual members, members of academic institutions, members of international educational institutions, retired people, students, and community volunteers.

Well, you want to know how NAFSA membership can help, don’t you? The first obvious advantage is the opportunity to communicate with about 10,000 members. In addition to that, you are offered the opportunity to use the NAFSA Career Center to get a clear insight into the world of international education and career building. In addition, there are many learning resources freely available to the members, like e-learning courses, workshops, seminars and so on. Moreover, there is the opportunity to get free expert information on the government regulations and compliance for international students.

The association does not offer membership to institutions but only to individual members. However, many experts in the field of international education have chosen to be members of NAFSA for various reasons. Firstly, it enables them to be ready to face unexpected eventualities; both man-made and natural. When their institution is in an emergency, the members can rely on NAFSA for latest and authoritative information. This makes the works of international student advisors and similar professionals more accurate, authoritative, and timely.

A perfect example of this reliability of NAFSA for NAFSA international educators is the way the association helped many education abroad officials when there was Ebola virus attack in West Africa. During the time of crisis, many of them used the resources, news, and knowledge offered by NAFSA to handle their study abroad programs.

Similarly, NAFSA did a commendable job during Hurricane Katrina. With an online communication platform and emails containing links to specific resources and recommendations on evacuation, the association proved its ability to help its members in hours of crisis. These are only a few examples of how the association helps both students and organizations in many different ways. The conclusion is that a membership helps, if you can afford it.

NAFSA membership is really useful if you are an international student planning to study in the U.S. When I started my search for an appropriate college to join in the U.S as an international student, I had very little idea where and how to get financial aid for my studies. It was at that time that I came across NAFSA. From there, I found much useful information regarding funding for foreign students of both undergraduate and graduate levels. A simple visit of the association website offered me a number of books, like Financial Aid for Study Abroad, Financial Aid for Undergraduate International Students, and NAFSA International Marketplace with all the information I was looking for. Thus, I managed to get funding for my studies with ease. If you are an international student who feels at sea, NAFSA is the best place for you to approach for reliable, expert and up-to-date information on any query you have regarding international education and career development.
