What do I need in order to apply for a student visa?

For over a decade now, I have been thinking of pursuing my undergraduate studies abroad. I would like to be advised on how I can obtain a student visa. Help me understand the minimum requirements needed before I begin the process of visa application. In addition, I would appreciate a lot if you can help me get acquainted with the specific requirements necessary to pursue international studies abroad. Finally, I would like to know the basic requirements that must be satisfied by every foreign student before he or she is allowed to study in Australia.

Student visas are basic requirements for all students planning to study for a period exceeding three months in a foreign country. It is an official certification granting a student legal permission to study, work and reside in his/her country of destination. There are several steps followed before one is granted a study visa. First of all, begin by collecting all the requirements required for study visa application. Not that every document submitted to the Australian embassy or any other Australian visa application office must be certified. A ‘certified copy’ is a copy of original document or transcript that has been notarized.  The submission of documents is a significant phase of Australian study visa application process. Normally, the Australian embassy or consulate does not demand original documents, and as a result, you will only need to prepare certified ones. Make sure that your documents satisfy the minimum requirement that I have listed below:

  • You should have a Confirmation of Enrolment letter from a recognized institution of higher learning. You must submit original copies which should indicate that you have been confirmed to a full-time program at an Australian university.
  • The letter of confirmation should indicate your entry level, the name of the study program, admission dates, tuition fee, CRICOS course as well as provider codes.
  • A duly completed and signed Form 157A (student visa application form. This can also be accompanied or substituted fulfilled and signed Form 54(family composition form).
  • A checklist of the documents which are provided during the application process.
  • Copy  of your passport
  • Four filled personal adhesive name and  labels of your address
  • A passport sized photo
  • Certified copies of your  relevant educational qualifications
  • Certified proof of English Language Test scores (TOEFL/ IELTS/ iBT/ PTE) that must have been taken within the past two years.
  • Proof of financial ability that can sustain you throughout your study period
  • Proof of cash deposits that should include up-to-date cash books, bank slips and certified copies of deposits.
  • Proof of medical fitness and history.

In addition, before you are permitted to study- in-Australia, all notarized education credentials should clearly indicate award confirmation, your full name, a course title, the name of your university.

Getting an admission to pursue international studies somewhere abroad will require you to satisfy all the regulations stipulated in the study visa/permit application requirements and procedure I have outlined above. Once you have your Australian study visa, it means you are eligible to study in Australia.

The explanation above regarding obtaining an Australian study visa is quite informative. It has explored the most important and sensitive aspects of visa application. I believe that it can be very heartbreaking to begin a visa application process only to be told months later that you did not meet the required standards.  My advice is that all students intending to further their studies in Australia should seek professional guidance regarding studying abroad. They should also put enough effort in their high school or undergraduate grades since these will also influence a lot if they meet the minimum entry requirements into an Australian college.

On the other hand, since the Australian government is very strict on the financial status of international students, long before you think of flying to Australia, make sure you have applied for grants, student loans, fellowships and scholarships which can support you through your study period. Most importantly, make sure that you maintain your insurance coverage throughout your study period.
