Already in 1990 the countries involved in the Treaty of Amazonian Cooperation, had recommended expanding the Canaima National Park in a southerly direction to connect with the Monte Roraima National Park in Brazil, with the co-ordinated management of tourism, research and conservation.[1] In 1994, the Canaima National Park was named a world Heritage site by UNESCO, as a natural reserve that has abrupt relief special and unique in the world, the tepuis.
