What can I do to get inspired when I have no motivation to do anything?

For the last couple of months, I have had no motivation to do anything. I have no motivation to study or even participate in sports that I really enjoy like basketball, football and swimming. I have tried reading books and articles about how to be more motivated and tips on how to motivate yourself but I am still struggling. I have even tried to focus on the good things in my life and my achievements but this did not work either. I really want to get the zeal for life again.

Not having any motivation to do anything is normal for everyone. Some days you
might wake up feeling excited about your day and energetic to take on any task you are given and on other days, you might dread going through your day. This feeling normally goes away after a few days. However, if you are feeling down and unenthusiastic about life for an extended period of time, I would suggest you see a doctor so that he or she can determine whether or not you are suffering from depression.

If you are not suffering from depression, there are a number of things you can do for self-motivation. They include:

  • Reduce Distractions
    It is very easy to lose focus when there are so many things to distract you in your immediate environment. If you are trying to complete a task, find a quiet and peaceful environment to work on the task. It might also help to switch off your phone or use applications like StayFocusd on your browser.
  • Get Motivation from People in Your Life
    Learning how to get more motivated is unnecessary when you have people around you who you can get motivation from. Spend time with positive and motivated people who are enthusiastic about life and are constantly trying different things. Their enthusiasm might just rub off on you.
  • Get an Accountability Partner
    You can also get motivation from being accountable to someone else. Tell someone close to you what you intend to do and by when. Ask them to check up on your progress occasionally as well. When you know someone will check up on your progress, you are less likely to slack on the job.
  • Focus on Good and Positive Things
    If you are always thinking of the things you can change or the bad things that have happened to you, you will not be motivated to do any task. Instead of focusing on what hasn’t worked out, focus on what has. It will also help to list down everything that has worked out as you hoped in your life. This will improve your mood and will definitely encourage you to do what is required of you.
  • Meditate or Pray. When you are feeling like there is nothing you can do to change the situation, it can help to pray or meditate. Prayer and meditation will improve your mindset and give you a state of calm which might help in motivating you.

It is not easy to motivate yourself when you do not feel like doing anything. I would suggest you seek help from other people. If you have a strong support system, I encourage you to tell them what you are going through. They will most likely know what to say or do to cheer you up and get you back to normal. It is also advisable for you to talk to an expert like a therapist; they will suggest proven and scientifically tested methods of fixing your situation. Last but not least, try as much as possible to be in the company of others. Spending time on your own will only make matters worse because it will make you spend a lot of time thinking about your situation. In contrast, when you spend time with people, you are more likely to cheer up and gain motivation.

From my understanding of the situation, when you have no motivation to do anything, your childhood holds the key as to why this is so. If you cultivated a strong study policy and learned the value of hard work early on in your life you would have all the motivation you needed as it becomes a part of you. As you have described in your answer, there are ways to motivate yourself later on in life. It is normal to have different levels of motivation in your everyday life, but no motivation at all is dangerous to your overall development.
