When a fission chain reaction gets out of control, this can cause an explosion. Normally, the fission chain reactions are regulated by the control rods in a nuclear reactor. However, in cases of accidents, these chain reactions release high-energy very quickly. This leads to explosions and other life-threatening incidents.
