The two characteristics that differentiate private goods from public goods are:1) the Private goods are used by those who pay for it, while the public good are for all to use. People don't specifically own them, their openness to the general and to all the people. This property is called non - excludability2) the Non-rivalry that is to say, A person who uses any good/services can not prevent others from using, because it is a public property.
