What are the secrets on how to be a better person in life?

Most of my friends have always complained about my character whenever I am in their company so I have a desire to become better. While people form friendship and maintain it, I have been a victim of many broken relationships with friends since I was a small child. I know there are characteristics that people may dislike about me; probably it could be my inability to increase self confidence. Since I would like to know how to be a better person, I am curious to learn the secrets of how to ‘improve yourself’. I tend to believe in learning especially concerning ways to better yourself.

Since life is all about interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, it is worth pursueing the steps towards being a better person. Your question is one of the questions I would ask myself as I grew up. I would challenge myself to become a better person each day of my life. Consequently, I bought many books to read about wise people who I admired. Through it, I realized the journey of improving oneself was not as easy as it sounded. It actually took a lot of sacrifices and effort to walk through the socially desirable path.

I will share various insights on being a better person to oneself and to other people:

  • Improving yourself entails seeking to understand the areas that need to be improved. I understand that some people may desire change but barely know how they want to achieve it. One thing I knew I needed to improve was in terms of communication skills and ability to appreciate what other people were. By identifying these areas, it was easy for me to actualize my desire.
  • The other way to better yourself is setting realistic goals and working towards them. I have often challenged my friends to set smart goals before working on them. If you want to be a better person, then you need to achieve something you have never done before. I am certain that such things don’t happen without prior plans and deliberate actions.
  • Increasing your self-confidence is inevitable as long as you want to become a better person. One quote I believe in is that success is based on the confidence one has in walking the new path. Many people may associate success with personal abilities and knowledge. I agree with them but also accentuate the significance of self-confidence. Through courage and self-confidence, I can count so many things I have achieved including speaking in front of a large audience.
  • Identify a role model walk closely with him or her to make the steps you ought to. My mentor would always challenge me to do things differently. As a result, I had to be creative in all I did and ensure I handle issues better than I did in the past. Having a role model is beneficial. I can attest that there are levels in life one may never reach without having a mentor or a role model to motivate and guide you.

I think that from the moment a person starts questioning their own behavior and thinking that it can be possible to make some personal improvements, they tend to become better. I think that the big change starts at that moment when we take a break to look at our inner self and explore our qualities and our flaws. I totally agree with the idea of setting realistic goals. For example, it’s hard to change our character, but we can try to moderate it. And that’ll be good because a small change can make a big difference and increase self confidence.

I agree with every insight and concept of making oneself better. Everyone in life wants to become a better person. Unfortunately, few of them are willing to pay the cost of becoming better. I have observed various young people especially those in college. I have noted that many want to know how to be a better person, have a good life in future, and become better professionals and role models in the society. However, few are willing to do the practical things self-exploration and setting of goals. In fact, they would seem as if parents force them into learning institutions. If you need to be a better person, then you have to work towards it by implementing some of the things your mentor shares with you. I know how beneficial it is to have a role model. It was through my mentor that I was able to pursue a good course and later landed on a good business idea that changed my life completely.
