Emergent literacy is the stage of reading development in childhood that takes place before the "traditional" reading goals are actually achieved. Emergent literacy has many ways of getting children the help they need to become the participation and the good readers and students. Some of the major elements in emergent literacy include sight vocabulary, syllabication, prior knowledge, decoding, letter to sound correspondence, along with concepts of print and phonemic awareness. Emergent literacy programs advocate of the social interaction and direct instruction as well. Repeated readings of the children and the shared reading of scripture are important in order to foster the success of emerging literacy initiatives.
