What are the duties of the Indiana Department of Education?

Growing up, I always admired my teachers. I thought they had the coolest jobs. I was fascinated by how they impacted knowledge and helped mold some of the greatest minds. For this reason, I grew up wanting to be a teacher. Now that I am done with high school, I am sure this is the career path I want to follow. I would like to know more about the Indiana Department of Education; what the department does, whether or not it is related to the higher education commission and everything to do with the education system. I believe this is important information to have especially when I start looking for suitable academic positions to apply to in the future. I would like to understand the industry I am getting into better.

The Department of Education in Indiana or IDOE is the executive agency that is responsible for implementing policies that have been adopted by the legislature or the governor in the secondary and primary schools in the state of Indiana.

The department has the following responsibilities:

  • Coordination of the private school voucher program in the state
  • Administering standardized tests mandated by the state
  • Assignment of letter grades to the schools in the state and
  • Overseeing the compliance with federal education laws

Apart from these duties, the department is also responsible for a number of education- related tasks such as selecting textbooks, overseeing the curriculum and maintaining all teachers’ licensing records. The department of education is headed by the superintendent of public instruction who is elected every four years.

The Indiana Department of Education is related to the Commission of Higher Education in the sense that they are both departments in the system of education. However, these two bodies do two different jobs. The Higher Education Commission is a private or government agency that is charged with the responsibility of higher education. The commission’s responsibility is to regulate both private and public post-secondary education institutions like college and university and is headed by the Minister of Education. Therefore, if you choose an academic position in a primary or secondary school in Indiana, you will be basically under the department of education in Indiana.
