What are the benefits of taking short courses online?

My friends rave about short courses and how beneficial they are for one’s career. I, on the other hand, believe they are a waste of time. In fact, I came across a center for online education that offers numerous short courses online. Most of the courses are really similar and there are very limited online learning resources on the site. If you ask me, it is better to take a long course that offers everything you need instead of taking these short courses. Am I right? Are there any real benefits that one gets from short courses offered online?

A lot of people share your sentiments. They believe it is better to take on-campus studies even if they take longer. However, what most people do not know is that there are amazing benefits one can derive from taking a short course online. These include:

  • Interaction With the Global Class

While studying on-campus, you can only interact with the students you go to school with. Most on-campus students never get an opportunity to interact with students from different countries. However, this is guaranteed when you are getting your education from an online education center. Students create group discussions with other students who are taking the same course and can interact socially on social media platforms. This is a very interesting experience especially if you are passionate about cultural diversity.

  • Reduced Expenses

When you are living and studying on-campus, you will incur a lot of costs. You will have to pay for books, housing, tuition, entertainment and other things to ensure your experience is great. This is not the case when you are studying online. When it comes to online studying the only costs you incur are internet connection costs, tuition and paying for online resources for learning such as eBooks.

  • You Can Study on the Go

Modern technology has made it possible to access online learning materials very easily. You can take your classes while traveling, during breaks or even during your vacation. You do not have to be at a specific place to take the classes. This is great if you have a busy schedule. Online lessons will easily fit into your busy life.

  • Self-Motivation

A distance learner has to stay motivated to succeed in their online program. This is because they have complete control of organizing their learning schedule. This enables them to develop important skills such as discipline and organizational skills which are not only beneficial for learning but also very important in the job market.

  • It addresses Individual’s Unique Needs

Unlike on-campus learning, online learning does not provide a one-size-fits-all kind of learning approach. The education is organized in a manner that caters to every individual’s needs. If you are an auditory learner, there are videos for you. If you learn better through visuals, there are plenty of visual study materials. There is something for everyone and the best thing is that you get to choose which study material works best for you. This is why most online students succeed in their programs.

I think it is better to get your education on campus instead of doing short online courses. I say this because campus experience provides more opportunities for individual and intellectual growth. While studying on-campus you get to interact with people in person. This gives you the opportunity to see how different people behave and think and it challenges you on an intellectual level.  For instance, if you are friends with someone who works very hard to excel, you might put more effort into your own studies because you also begin to strive for more when you see other people working hard. These friendships also make the experience more enjoyable. You can have fun after school or chat with your classmates to unwind. This is not possible with online learning. In most cases, it is a lonely experience which can hinder your overall development. Therefore, I wouldn’t advise anyone to enroll in online courses.
