What are some good study habits that can help me improve my performance at school?

I always study when I know exams are around the corner. While this has always worked well for me, I do not think it will work in my senior year. This is because senior year is more complex and there is a lot of material to cover. I need to develop good study habits and learn how to study hard even when I do not have exams. For this reason, I would like suggestions on the best study techniques and how I can use them to improve my performance at school.

A lot of students assume that the only reason they should study is that they will have to sit for an exam. This shouldn't be your motivation to study. You need to study so that you can learn important things that will mold you to become a better person. Developing good studying habits will not only help you pass your exams but will also enable you to learn more effectively.

Some of the best studying techniques you can use include:

  • Creating a plan: If you want to learn how to study harder, the first thing you will need to do is create a study plan. Your plan should include which topics you want to learn, for how long and how long you will take a break. A study plan is very important because it prepares you for studying thereby preventing you from wasting time.
  • Choose a suitable study environment: To study effectively, you need to ensure your study environment is free of distractions and has everything you need to study. Avoid taking your phone or anything else that might distract you in the room where you are studying.
  • Group Discussions: If you struggle with a specific subject, it might be a good idea to join a group discussion to improve on that subject. This will enable you to learn from other students and get the help you need on the subject.
  • Practice Tests: If you want to improve on a specific topic, practice tests can really help. These tests will enable you to know what you need to improve on. This enables you to focus on your weak areas rather than focusing on what you already know. You can get practice tests online or in textbooks.
  • Take Notes: Whenever your teacher is explaining something in class, make sure you take down good notes. Notes make it easier for you to study because they highlight the important concepts. As a result, you will not have to read everything to identify these important aspects.
  • Review Material: It’s very important for you to review your material requently if you do not want to forget what you have learned. All the material you have learnt should be reviewed as early as possible. Consistently doing this will give you an easy time especially during
    examinations.
  • Get Clarifications: Another thing that will help you study more effectively is asking questions whenever you do not understand what your instructor is teaching about. This will help you have an easier time understanding the concept when you begin reading the material.

I agree. Good study habits are very important if you want to maintain a good academic performance. To improve your performance, I would advise you to overlearn your material. Overlearning your material simply means reading it over and over again even if you believe you understand it completely. The advantage of doing this is that it improves your memory and makes it very difficult for you to forget what you have learned. I did this during my high school days and I always found it very easy to study for my exams. However, I would suggest you focus on your weak areas more since these might be the easiest to forget especially if you are trying to grasp a difficult concept. I would also advise you to take breaks between your study sessions. According to research, we lose concentration after about 30 minutes of studying. Therefore, it might be a good idea to take at least 15-minute breaks after every thirty minutes of studying. This will make your study sessions more effective
