Poe Mask of the Red Death is probably in reference to theBubonic Plague that spread throughout Europe during the 14thcentury. Originally called the "Black Death," Poe uses the term Redas something more Gothic. The phrase "I come as a thief in thenight" is an allusion to 1 Thessalonians 5:2.
