Was there religious freedom in the Byzantine Empire?

Yes, the Byzantine Empire was a very tolerant society. It was so tolerant, that even had a synagogue and a mosque in Constantinople, which was a shock for that period. Many Roman Catholic leaders in the West criticized Constantinople for being too lenient with the Muslims and the Jews, since the West did not grant religious freedom to these groups and, in fact, openly persecuted them. However, people of many races and religions lived in co-operation and peace in the Byzantine Empire.
