Yes, during the Carboniferous period (that is to say, the time whenmost of our coal resources formed), the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were much higher than they are now. Thisproduced a greenhouse effect so strong that not only theglaciers melt but there was also no polar ice caps!
