R: before that the north east became industrial, it was largely agrarian as the South, but without many of the slaves, not to be profitable due to the rocky soil. Subsequently, the South remained agrarian, while some Northern states even went so far one of the abolition of slavery, the increase of the cross section of the differences even more.
