The given statement is true. The pioneer species refers to the hardy species which are the first to disseminate to the previously destroyed or altered ecosystems. You start a chain of ecological succession that eventually results in a greater biological diversity in steady-state ecosystems. Consider the example of an area affected by the eruption of a volcano. In such cases, all the vegetation is destroyed, and even after the cooling and hardening of the lava, it would not be easy for plants to grow due to the absence of soil. In such cases, ecological succession is initiated by the introduction of certain pioneer species such as fungi, bacteria and lichens. These pioneer species has the tendency to thrive in rocks and minerals.
