The literacy of the media, in general, know how to read and write (reasonably well). Spelling means to be able to spell words. It is common for people who know how to read and write still spell very bad. It is possible for a person to be able to spell words and not be able to read or write sentences. (I imagine that this would involve a disability of some kind.) Therefore, they are different.
